THE HISTORY OF STORYBOOK ESTATES

Today, Storybook Estates has become one of the Ozarks’ premier destinations for weddings, retreats, and special events — but its story began long before celebrations filled the estate.

Originally built by the Pickle family during the Civil War era, the historic property carries generations of Ozark history within its walls. The 19th-century structure once served as a working homestead, where Percheron draft horses occupied stalls on one side while milk cows lined the hand-built oak manger on the other.

Today, that rich history lives on through a timeless setting that blends historic character, European-inspired charm, and the natural beauty of the Ozarks.

The original Pickle homestead was a humble two-room clapboard home featuring twin fireplaces — one room dedicated to cooking and gathering, the other used for rest and sleep. Today, scenes like this are rarely found outside the quiet Amish farms scattered throughout the Ozarks.

Still standing just steps from Storybook Estates, the historic homestead now begins a new chapter under a new name: The Cottage.
